Borreguitas: How Good Can A Vegan Mexican Restaurant Really Be?
Vegan Mexican food sounds like an oxymoron to me. Aside from beans and rice, traditional Mexican food consists of tacos, tamales, pozole, enchiladas, and more all typically made with beef, pork, chicken, and cheese. So how does a vegan Mexican food stack up against traditional fare?
Enter, Borreguitas, a vegan Mexican restaurant located at 987 S. Garey Ave. in Pomona CA. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, their menu is varied with all the traditional meals made with no meat. Their meat substitutes are typically soy-based, but they also use ingredients like cabbage, napal (cactus), and papas (potato).
The food here is exquisite. Their street tacos made with soy-based asada, pastor, papas con chorizo, papas con napal, and re-chicken (cababge) are absolutely delicious, flavorful, and filling.
Breakfast burritos and breakfast plates are a great way to start the day with a healthy and satisfying meal, and the vegan pozole (traditional Mexican soup) is as good as it gets.
Enjoy your meal with an agua fesca. My favorites are the lime and cucumber, and horchata.
Unfortunately, the food is only available for take-out and delivery. Since the pandemic, the dining area has been closed, but will hopefully re-open soon.
Even if you don’t normally eat vegan food, I think you will love the food at Borreguitas.
